The Eternal Blossoms

Krishna Janamashtami 2008

“Lord Krishna’s curls were like the ocean’s waves falling upon themselves—so perfect, natural, and full. His eyes were like a cow’s eyes—big, beautiful, dark, and deep. His skin shimmered in beauty. Each cell of his body was absolutely perfect in beauty. His laughter made everyone laugh. His dancing made everyone dance. His silence silenced everyone. Everyone’s mind, body, and soul hung on every movement of Krishna’s. Every day, all those around him fell more and more madly in love with Krishna.

Only in Brindavan was there peace. Do you know why? This is why: everyone in Brindavan was only thinking about Krishna. Their eyes were seeking to see Krishna. Their ears were listening for Krishna. Their tongue was yearning for the taste of Krishna’s food. Their hearts were yearning to be with Krishna. All of that which constitutes a human being was yearning for Krishna… In this way, Krishna played the most magnificent game. In just the years of his childhood, he enlightened the many thousands in Brindavan.”

—Swami Sai Premananda

Lord Krishna, the eight incarnation of Maha Vishnu and a Purna Avatar, descended on earth around 3000 B.C. at midnight on the 8th night of the dark half of the lunar month of Shravan. In his youth, he created the path of loving God through the play between him and his divine consort Maha Lakshmi in the form of Radha as well as all their intimate companions. In his adulthood, he communicated the Bhagavad Gita, the song of God, to the righteous Arjuna, illuminating Arjuna’s spiritual intelligence and leading him to victory in the war against the Kauravas, representative of the aspirant’s battle and victory against the ego with devotion and surrender in God and Guru. Krishna Janamashtami marks the celebration of the birth of the Lord of Love, the complete manifestation of Lord Vishnu’s beauty and splendor, Sri Krishna.
