Vedic Mantras

Om Sayeesvaraya Vidmahe
Sathya Devaaya Dheemahi
Thannah Sarva Prachodayat

“We know this Sai is supreme divinity incarnate.
We meditate on this God of truth.
May this divine personality lead us
on the path of total liberation.”

The Sai Gayatri is a praise of, meditation upon, and prayer to the complete manifestation of universal consciousness of this age, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. By repeating this mantra with devotion and surrender, we can connect with Lord Sai (Sayeesvaraya) who is the embodiment of truth (Sathya Deva) and be led towards fully realizing the Absolute.

The Guru Gita is the celestial discourse given by Lord Shiva to Mother Parvati on the Guru Principle. It is found in the latter chapters of the Skanda Purana, an ancient Hindu text. The Guru Gita reveals to the spiritual aspirant the nature of the Guru, gives glimpses to the Guru’s ultimate reality, and provides the path as to how the aspirant can win the Guru’s grace. When recited with devotion and surrender, the Guru’s grace descends, granting ultimate liberation.

Oh, destroyer of Cupid (desire)! Oh, three-eyed one (one with the eye of non-duality)! Salutations to you—the forest-lover (a place of meditation), the nearest and the farthest, the smallest and the largest, the oldest and the youngest: Salutations to you who are everything and beyond everything!

—Shiva Mahimna Stotra

The Shiva Mahimna Stotra was said to be created by a Gandharva (divine musician) named Pushpadanta who sought to appease Lord Shiva to escape punishment from his misdeeds. When we chant the Shiva Mahimna Stotra with surrender and devotion, we can similarly detach from the limited and binding and connect to the ultimate consciousness of Shiva.

Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Deemahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

“The one who pervades the physical, mental, and spiritual; the transcendental force, the sustainer of creation, the most beloved; the effulgence of this Supreme Lord do we meditate upon. Our intellect please make illumined.”

The Gayatri Mantra is considered as the ultimate mantra and the essence of the Vedas. In one powerful mantra, the Absolute is praised, meditated upon, and prayed to. Every level of existence is acknowledged as being the Divine as well as existing due to the Divine. When recited correctly and with devotion, higher intelligence is awakened and oneness with the Absolute is attained.

Maha Vishnu contains two mantras: “Om Namo Narayanaya” and the Vishnu Gayatri. Both mantras are offerings to Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the universe. These mantras confer peace, prosperity, and liberation upon the one who chants them with sincerity and devotion.

Om Namo Narayanaya“Prostrations unto Lord Narayanaya.”

Vishnu Gayatri
Narayanaya Vidmahe
Vasudevaya Dheemahi
Thano Vishnu Prachodayat

“Let us meditate on Sri Vishnu, who is also Sri Narayana, the Lord who dwells in all beings and is known as the sovereign of the world. May he inspire and illumine our mind and understanding.”
